I understand people being mad at Joss for firing Charisma

xlivvielockex:

samgeeky:

I really get it. His treatment of her, her character, and her final exit on the show was awful, and I won’t forgive him for those things.

But he did not fire her for being pregnant. He fired her for being unable to do the things he wanted her to do. It wasn’t like “Pregnancy? HOW DARE YOU?!” One would assume the same would have happened if a male sustained an injury affecting the entire plot of a season. It wasn’t because she was pregnant, it was because of what that did to her ability to work.

Like I’m not even sure where to begin with this line of patriarchal male entitlement bullshit logic. However, the next season, David Boreanaz had a knee injury that caused him to be unable to do a lot of the fight scenes and acting scenes that were required, causing them to change the plot of several episodes. He wasn’t fired. Same situation as you put forth and yet, wow, they were able to make accommodations for the man. I know someone out there who knows more about Alexis Denisof and his Bell’s Palsy can speak to some episodes being changed for his condition when it was bad?

Charisma has said over and over she was fired for being pregnant, she was mistreated on set, she was called “that fat actress”. There is a radio interview where two of the writers refer to her as “that pregnant fat actress” instead of by name. These things are all matter of public record and can easily be found online. Regardless of how you want to view it, she got fired because she got pregnant and by the time she found out (because it’s not like bam! conception, now I’m pregnant! It can take months before a woman knows she is pregnant) it was too late to go with the original plan. She was punished for this.

A woman has a right to make decisions about her own body and to carry a child without it affecting whether or not she has a job. The same exceptions made for men for medical leave should be made for women who want to have children. Only we live in a world where rich white men rule and women aren’t afforded the same rights to their body as men are.

In re: to this whole ability to do her job thing (which again, wow). Women in Hollywood get pregnant constantly. It doesn’t interfere with their ability to work. Plots are re-written. Pregnancies have been written around and incorporated into shows since the beginning of film and will continue long until Joss Whedon is cold and dead in the ground. If soap writers can do it more masterfully and without punishing their actors, then someone like Joss Whedon should be more than able to as well.
